Overflows and Overflow Repairs
Plumbing, whether it’s in your home or office should be designed to send water where you want it to go and no where else.
Fresh water should enter your premises from the water main, then through the main shutoff valve, through various taps into the sinks and appliances where your want it (and not by way of leaking pipes in the walls!). Some systems may first direct the water into a storage tank located near the top or your premises and then flow to the various taps and appliances by gravity, but other systems may put the mains pressure direct to the taps and appliances, usually after going through a pressure regulator.
Some of the water that enters your home may be used internally as in drinking and cooking, but the great majority of this water leaves the home as waste water which is polluted to varying degrees. It is important that this waste water leaves your home by way of the drains, and especially not by way of overflows which can damage your premises.
Wastewater leaves the house through the wastewater system. It’s very important that a trap system is put in place as part of the wastewater system. A trap retains a small amount of water and prevents sewer gases from entering the house through the pipes. As you can tell there is a lot to set up when doing plumbing and it’s always best to hire a plumber rather than trying to do it yourself.
Overflows ( not to be confused with leaks) generally come from one of three sources:
- Overflows of the storage tanks near the top of your premises. This type of overflow will be clean water but since its coming from the top of the premises has perhaps more potential for general damage.
- Over flows from sinks and appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers. This water will normally be only slightly polluted, and the damage is usually limited to the room which the overflow occurs.
- Waste water from toilets is the most polluted of all and the cleanup can be more difficult.
Dealing with overflows requires different skills and approaches, but Home Edge plumbers are experts in applying the correct tactics for all overflow problems.
